Understanding DfE Improving School Attendance Guidance Autumn 22 (Primary)

The DfE published its new guidance on improving attendance ‘Working together to improve school attendance’ in May 2022 and it applies from September. The guidance details the expectations and responsibilities of not only schools in ‘proactively managing and improving attendance’ but also Local Authorities.

This session will be delivered by Victoria Franklin, who is a qualified social worker with more than 25 years’ experience in working in education settings.  She is currently a senior education welfare consultant working across all phases of education.  Victoria is the President of the National Association of Support Workers in Education (NASWE) and delivers national training on a wide range of attendance matters.

The beliefs, knowledge, understanding and/or teaching practices this programme aims to address:

  • Pupils with the highest attainment at the end of key stage 2 and key stage 4 have higher rates of

attendance over the key stage compared to those with the lowest attainment

  • Successfully treating the root causes of absence and removing barriers to attendance, at home, in school or more broadly requires schools and local partners to work collaboratively with, not against families

Intended Impact on practice:

  • Inform leaders of the 6 expectations of schools to manage and improve attendance effectively

Intended improvement and/or evaluation of impact for pupils, including those with SEND and/or disadvantaged backgrounds:

  • Improved attendance
