This programme will focus on the effective pedagogical content knowledge in science as outlined in Ofsted’s Research review series on science (April 2021) which unpicks high-quality science education.
Throughout the year, participants will cover:
Metacognitive strategies linked to specific science curriculum content- Explicit teaching using explanations, models and analogies that challenge pupils’ misconceptions; Guided retrieval practice and feedback
Reading, writing and talking to support science achievement- Using scientific texts to extend pupils’ vocabulary and understanding of abstract science concepts, using structured speaking and writing activities to orally rehearse scientific knowledge and understanding using scientific vocabulary.
Planning purposeful practical work that is linked to curriculum content and sequenced so that it develops pupils’ knowledge after initial explicit instruction.
The programme will allow participants to embed learning between sessions.
